MMUN: QAIS in Rome!

MYP students, Mike, Monty, Anna, and Wendy (MYP 1), Andrew (MYP 2), Coco, Merry, Matvei, Alan, and Oliver (MYP 4), and Kevin (MYP 5) stepped onto a truly global stage as they represented QAIS at the Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) Conference in Rome, Italy.

MMUN is a unique educational program that brings the principles and practices of the United Nations to students; allowing them to take on the roles of delegates.

At its heart, MMUN reflects what we believe at QAIS: that education plays a powerful role in building a more peaceful world. Students stepped into the roles of global delegates, represented countries such as Germany, Romania, Saudi Arabia, and the Central African Republic, engaging in meaningful dialogue on issues including human rights, food security, and global health.

MYP 5 Kevin’s outstanding contributions in the Human Rights Council led him to being selected as a lead speaker, where he presented a summary of his council’s work to the full assembly. This took place at the real Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome, where he spoke from the same seats as real UN delegates. It was a powerful moment that reflected both his confidence and the impact of the MMUN experience on our students. QAIS was also recognized as a legacy school, as we have participated in MMUN over the last 10 years.

Beyond the conference, students had the opportunity to explore and truly experience the richness of Rome. Moments of awe stood out, from stepping into breathtaking basilicas they had only seen in books, to experiencing the overwhelming beauty of the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican. The journey blended history, culture, and hands-on learning, with highlights including a visit to the Colosseum, and even a “Gladiator Day” training experience. Students also enjoyed an Italian cooking workshop, creating handmade pasta and desserts, explored vibrant street art in Garbatella, spent time in the beautiful Villa Borghese, and visited the historic Gelateria Fassi, where they made their own gelato.

From powerful speeches to quiet moments of awe, from thoughtful debate to shared laughter, this journey to Rome was one our students will carry with them for years to come.
