QAIS is a diverse community of students with more than 30 countries and territories.
QAIS offers a comprehensive program of student-centered, inquiry based education for ages 18 months to 18 years, using the proven methods of Montessori and International Baccalaureate (IB). These programs acknowledge the child’s desire to improve skills and understanding, and nurture that innate desire to help the child grow as a lifelong learner.
In traditional schools, the child is forced to develop toward goals that are imposed by someone else, regarding everything from what they learn, when they learn it, and how they demonstrate what they have learned. By contrast, QAIS programs acknowledge that there are different types of intelligence. Children engage with learning experiences in different ways, just as they act on and exhibit their knowledge in different ways.
In addition to academic rigor, our programs help students to develop independence, intrinsic motivation, focus, and love of learning. At the same time, we believe that it is our responsibility as educators to foster an environment where children learn how to work for peace.
QAIS is the first International Baccalaureate World School in Shandong Province, offering the prestigious Diploma Programme, Middle Years Programme, and Primary Years Programme. We are the 17th school in China to offer all three of these programs, making us an “IB Continuum School”. IB is the highest standard in international education, built to use students’ interests, skills, and lived experiences as the driving force for developing deep conceptual understanding.
The Toddler and Early Childhood programs at QAIS are accredited by the American Montessori Society. While thousands of schools claim to follow the child-centered Montessori philosophy, QAIS is the first school in Asia to receive this accreditation. Our grades 1-3 classes are a mixed age classroom with a blended IB & Montessori Curriculum.
International Baccalaureate (IB) Programs were first developed to help families living outside their home country obtain the highest standard of education for their children, so that their children would easily matriculate to any program of study in the world. There are IB schools in most major international cities, so transferring is very easy if the family chooses to remain within the IB program. School and university systems around the world, in over 180 countries, will also recognize IB marks.
In university systems around the world, IB is the most widely-recognized international standard. If you visit any top international university’s website to view the Admission requirements, you will find their doors open to IB Diploma Programme graduates.
Our Children’s House uses Montessori methods and materials in the subject areas of Language, Math, Cultural, Practical Life, and Sensorial to help children develop independence and joy of learning through their Early Childhood education. Our teachers and administrators are all certified by the American Montessori Society (AMS) or Association Montessori International (AMI); we are the first school in Asia to be accredited by AMS.
QAIS students follow the International Baccalaureate PYP Program of Inquiry from ages 3-12. This program teaches concepts, skills, and attitudes through six transdisciplinary units each year. The school’s Program of Inquiry has been developed by our PYP teachers in line with the IB philosophy and methods.
QAIS also offers the IB Middle Years Programme (ages 12-16) and IB Diploma Programme (ages 16-18).
QAIS is licensed by the National Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. Our Toddler and Early Childhood programs are accredited by the American Montessori Society; we are the first school in Asia to receive this accreditation. These classes are also accredited by the Middle States Association.
QAIS is an IB World School offering the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, and Diploma Programme. The IB authorization process includes a rigorous evaluation of all aspects of the school by the International Baccalaureate Organization, including governance, financing, staff qualifications and methods, curriculum, assessment, parent involvement, facilities, and extra-curricular activities, to guarantee that the school is upholding the highest possible international educational standards.

QAIS teachers have a teaching certificate from their country of origin. All teachers (except for Chinese language teachers) are native English speakers. All teachers from Grade 1-12 are IB trained in their grade/subject. All Toddler and Early Childhood teachers are certified by the American Montessori Society or Association Montessori International. More than 70% of our teachers possess a master’s degree or other postgraduate qualification, and five possess doctoral degrees.
At QAIS, we take every opportunity to engage with the world around us, taking advantage of real-world learning experiences and applying our knowledge to the service of others. Each term, every student (K-12) takes multiple trips into the nearby community or further afield, to build connections between school and life, and to see real examples of the concepts being studied. In the past two years, QAIS students have visited:
Laoshan and outlying islands; Beijing, Shanghai Xi’an, and Guilin; Zhushan Nature Park; Skiing in Jimo and Qingzhou; Qufu; Chengdu; and international trips to London, Paris, Seoul, Rome, New York and Hong Kong.
Service is an important component of all students’ experience at QAIS, and is an integral part of the curriculum in the Middle Years Programme (Community and Service) and Diploma Programme (Creativity, Action, Service). Students in these programs are responsible for developing and carrying out their own service projects each year.
In our regular after school program, QAIS offers Guitar, Violin, Chorus, Taekwondo, Kung Fu, Lego Robotics, Yearbook Design, Soccer, Basketball, Ping Pong, Badminton, Piano, Chess, Volleyball, Calligraphy, Kindermusik, ESL, Rock Band, and Student Council.
All QAIS students have Chinese class every day. Incoming students are placed in Beginning, Intermediate, or Advanced Chinese class, according to their ability. Students who already speak and read Chinese fluently deepen their understanding of literature and culture. In 2012 and 2013, our AP Chinese students received the highest possible marks on their AP exam. All of our Chinese teachers have IB training and experience, and share the international staff’s commitment to engaging, inquiry-driven lessons.
Students can take the school bus to and from school daily. Each bus has a designated bus monitor to ensure child-safety, and an open line of communication with parents.
