DP Life Sciences in Action

At Qingdao Amerasia International School, science learning begins where curiosity meets experience. Our Diploma Programme students immerse themselves in hands-on inquiry, discovering how the invisible codes of life and the patterns of ecosystems can be revealed through observation and experimentation.

In DP1 Biology, students built foundational lab skills by practicing microscope techniques and observing tissue sections from organisms. They also extracted DNA from golden kiwi fruit, transforming what is normally too small to see into a shimmering thread of life in a test tube.

Building on those skills, DP2 Biology students turned their focus to plants. They studied stems and leaves under the microscope, contrasting observations with textbook plan diagrams, and began long-term experiments on the growth of mung bean plants and oyster mushrooms – cultivating patience as well as scientific precision.

DP2 Environmental Systems and Societies students expanded the scope outdoors, using quadrat analysis to measure species diversity and abundance on the Baishan School lawn. By mapping an urban ecosystem, they uncovered how living communities are shaped by subtle environmental factors – even as subtle as shade.

Through these experiences, QAIS learners don’t just study biology and ecology – they live them. In the IB spirit, they approach science as an active process of questioning, testing, and discovery, cultivating knowledge and the mindset of true explorers.
