Whispers: A Love Letter to Storytelling

As Literacy Week came to a close, the MYP 1 students brought the house down with their hauntingly beautiful performance, Whispers—a poetic tribute to myths, legends, and the enduring power of storytelling. 

“This show is a love letter to storytelling and its history,” said Ms. Yousef during the opening remarks. “Did you know that stories didn’t always have clear heroes and villains? And that movies used to be colorless? And before that, they were silent?” 

The performance featured four eerie and enchanting tales, each inspired by a myth or legend. There was a vampire who traps his real estate agent in a crumbling castle, a tormented werewolf hiding a secret from the woman he loves, a young girl accused of witchcraft, and a skeptical man whose beliefs are shattered when he encounters a ghost. 

For many of the students, this was more than a dramatic challenge—it was also a linguistic one. As Ms. Kurmanova explained, “Our Language Acquisition students are performing today in their second or third acquired language. So, it was an extra challenge—not only to understand the myths, but to bring the characters to life through voice, gesture, dialect, and emotion.” 

The production was also a chance for students to apply what they learned during Interdisciplinary Week, when they practiced blending language skills (both English and Chinese) with performing arts. 

From black and white makeup to a subtitled silent scene, every element of Whispers pulled the audience into a timeless world where folklore breathes, and shadows speak. As the final scene unfolded and students took their bows, it was clear they had done more than perform—they had transported us.

在文学周即将结束之际,MYP 1 的学生们带来精彩表演《低语》,充满诗意地向神话传说和故事的永恒力量致敬。

Yousef老师在开场白中说:“这场演出是一封写给哥特故事及其历史的情书。你知道吗,故事中的角色并不总是黑白分明的,最初的电影是无声的,画面也不是彩色的。”

表演讲述了四个阴森而迷人的故事,每个故事的灵感都来自一个神话或传说。一个吸血鬼将他的房地产经纪人困在一座破败的城堡里;一个饱受折磨的狼人向心爱的女人隐瞒了一个秘密;一个年轻女孩被指控施展巫术;还有一个持怀疑态度的男人在遇到鬼魂后信念破灭。

对于许多学生来说,这不仅是戏剧方面的挑战,同时也是语言的挑战。Kurmanova 老师认为:“英语语言习得班学生是在用他们所学的第二或第三种语言进行表演。这是一项额外的挑战,因为学生们不仅要理解神话传说,还要通过声音、手势、方言和情感将角色表现得栩栩如生。”

这次演出也是学生们应用跨学科周所学知识的一次实践机会,练习如何将语言技能(中英文)与表演艺术融合。

从黑白妆容到配以字幕的默剧场景,《低语》的每个元素都将观众带入了一个永恒的世界,感受民间传说的呼吸,倾听影子的呢喃。直到最后一幕演绎完成,学生们纷纷鞠躬致谢,观众们才恍然从表演者营造的世界回过神来,为这这段难忘的时光之旅感叹。
