Grade 1 visit BEG Founder

As part of their inquiry-based learning, Grade 1 students visited Ms. Zhang Baishan, Founder of Baishan Education Group. Centered on the theme “Artifacts and stories reveal common themes of human life across time and space,” the experience encouraged students to connect cultural heritage with human stories, fostering curiosity, empathy, and global understanding from an early age.

As part of their Unit of Inquiry, guided by the central idea “Artifacts and stories reveal shared themes of human life across time,” Grade 1 students explored their personal histories and selected meaningful artifacts to represent themselves. One of the artifacts they chose was their school campus.

Madame Baishan, The Baishan Education Group’s Founder, welcomed  students with grace, humor, and warmth, and thoughtfully answered their Unit of Inquiry questions; fueling the children’s curiosity and sense of wonder.

The students asked our living historical resource:

“Was it hard to build this school?”

“Who gave this school its name?”

“How old were you when you first thought of having your own school?”

“Why is it so big?”

“Why did you build this school?”

“Why did you want foreigners to come and teach here?”

“Why does the school have your name?”

When students learned that the school’s oldest artefacts are displayed in the Baishan History Museum, several immediately planned to climb the stairs afterward to photograph the precious exhibits; particularly the bedding and linens designed by Madam Baishan 33 years ago.

At the end of the interview, Madam Baishan suggested a group photo, sharing her hope that in 30 years’ time, this image would become another treasured historical artefact for today’s students.

ABOUT MADAME BAISHAN

Madam Baishan served in the military in the 1970s and later became the Head of the Art Education Department at Qingdao City Children’s Palace, where she was awarded “Outstanding Provincial Counselor.” She spent 17 years developing her educational philosophy.  In 1992, during China’s reform and opening-up period, policies allowing individual citizens to run schools marked a turning point in her life.

She often says: “Baishan School is my child. My greatest wish now is to accompany this child for a few more years, watching her grow into an even more vigorous and beautiful form on the fertile soil of education.”

Madam Baishan is a living legend who laid the foundation for Amerasia. What a gift it was for our young inquirers to learn directly from her story, wisdom, and heart.
