THE GREEN BIRD
The Green Bird, a Palestinian folktale, was beautifully brought to life through a student-led production filled with music, storytelling, theatre, and powerful student collaboration.
The performance was a moving celebration of international mindedness, cultural understanding, and student courage. From the heartfelt songs and live music to hearing students confidently pronounce Arabic words on stage, the production created a meaningful bridge between cultures and experiences. Subtle artistic choices, including the electricity going out during the performance, thoughtfully alluded to the realities faced in Gaza and added emotional depth to the story.
Many students stepped far outside of their comfort zones and experienced important “firsts” throughout the production. It was Daviana’s first theatrical performance, Merry’s first production at Amerasia, Doris and Fiona’s first lead roles, Angelina and Ivy’s first experience as stage managers, Isabella and Vicky’s first time working stage crew, and Owen’s very first show altogether. Their courage, growth, and commitment were inspiring to witness.
A particularly meaningful creative choice came through Merry’s character, who was mute. Together, Ms. Yousef and Merry developed a blend of American and Chinese Sign Language to bring the character to life in a thoughtful and inclusive way. A special musical highlight featured Mr. Murat Kaya, Ms. Jessica Tsuchiya, Mr. Rich Jones, Ms. Aisulu Kurmanova, Mr. Rafa Verdu, Ms. Gaukhar Sharipova, Ms. Gannett Cassidy, and the adult choir performing a moving rendition of “Eid al Ashak,” a song reflecting on the power of love.
The production was visually stunning, featuring beautiful digital backdrops and emotionally compelling performances throughout. All lead characters wore traditional Palestinian clothing generously lent by our Palestinian family-in-residence, Ms. Nesma El Maridi. Most importantly, The Green Bird reminded us of the power of the arts to build empathy, spark reflection, and bring communities together. Congratulations to all students and staff involved in this unforgettable performance.
