QAIS Grade 3 students explored Human Migration in their Unit of Inquiry, Where We Are in Place and Time, investigating why people move, settle, and adapt to new environments. Students examined the needs that influence human movement and connected their learning to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
Engaging in hands-on experiences such as sorting push-and-pull factors, mapping global migration examples, and analyzing the story Grandfather’s Journey to understand both the practical and emotional sides of migration; students developed their critical thinking, communication, and research skills.
During the Unit Celebration, students shared their insights about how economic, social, and environmental factors shape migration patterns and how these movements impact communities over time. They demonstrated thoughtful connections between human needs, geography, and personal decision-making, discussing topics such as the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, historical Chinese migration, and Syrian refugees.
Mr. David Nazari, Grade 3 Lead Teacher, reflects: “This unit effectively deepened students’ understanding of migration across time, encouraging them to explore its challenges and opportunities.”
Students closed the week by reflecting on how they might feel if they had to move to a new place, expressing empathy and deepening their global awareness. Well done, Grade 3!
